Extended Description
Davenport Tavern is a wonderful 18th century colonial that has been fully restored to highlight the numerous original features still intact. The home is reputed to be the third oldest in the City and part of the Meredith Parade Historic Trail. The Tavern was built in 1785 by George Leighton, an assessor. In 1793 the home was purchased by Richard Boynton who turned it into a tavern, which it remained for at least 60 years. Issac Currier purchased the home in 1824 and for some unkown reason, changed his name to Thomas Davenport. Speculation has it that he had trouble with the law and was in hiding. He owned and operated the tavern for 14 years before he hung himself from the rafters in the ell which has been since removed. The home was host to many great parties. it's location on the main stagecoach road to Canada leads us to believe there must have been some famous feet dancing on these great floors! It is believed that there was a partition between two rooms on the upper level that could be swung upward to create one large ball room. The home was tied up in litigation for years and fell into disrepair. The home was moved off the mian road and onto a new concrete foundation in circa 1980. As part of the restoration all of the interior systems were replaced and new chimneys installed that are faced with the original bricks. The post and beam structure is visible in most of the house along with the orginal wide pine plank floors. Superb craftsmanship has added built-in cabinetry and wainscoting in many rooms. The main home offers 3,515 square feet of living space. There are three functioning fireplaces and a restored cooking/woodstove in the kitchen. The kitchen now has all new stainless appliances and a gas stove in addition to the handsome woodstove. Newer space added in the 1980's offers a large family room and 450 square feet of finished living space over the 3 car garage that would be ideal for a studio, home office or in-law apartment. The yard offers mature landscaping with lighted perennial gardens and a raised garden bed to grow summer vegetables. Forty-five high bush blueb erry plants will keep you busy in August and 15 red raspberry bushes are just beginning to reach maturity. In addition, there is a small patch of strawberries and asparagus... There us an inground pool and stone patio. The adjacent properties include a seasonal nursery, 100+ acres of privately owned land in current recreation use, and the Prescott wildlife preservation area. These properties all offer miles of trails for use year-round. The home is located within easy commute to downtown Laconia (5 miles), Meredith (4 miles) and Weirs Beach (3 miles). Concord, New Hampshire is a 40 minute commute.
