About the Lakes Region

The Lakes Region consists of many of bodies of water including Lake Winnipesaukee, Squam Lake, Lake Winnisquam and Newfound Lake to name a few and has been a major tourist destination for more than a century.

Lake Winnipesaukee which means either "smile of the Great Spirit", or "beautiful water in a high place", is considered by man to be the crown jewel of all freshwater lakes in the northeast. Lake Winnipesaukee has been a destination for people escaping the summer heat of metropolitan Massachusetts and New York, with many returning to stay after retirement.

What makes Lake Winnipesaukee so unique is that it has over 250 islands and 288 miles of shoreline making it truly a boaters dream. Combine that with the eight that border the lake and you have a very special place. Each town has it's own character and flavor and can be visited by boat at their respective town docks.

The town of Meredith has become a destination on to it's self with their collection of waterfront inns including the Adirondack inspired Church Landing, and the Inn at Bay Point. Waterfront dining at the Camp or Town Docks restaurants along with a sunset walk along the shoreline walkway makes for a great evening.

Center Harbor is a quaint town with lovely shorefront and town beach. Center Harbor and Moultonborough are the only two towns that have waterfront on both Winnipesaukee and Squam Lakes. Eating dinner in the cupola of the Coe House is an experience that everyone should try at least once. Across their parking lot is Home Comfort one of the premier home decorating centers in all the Lakes Region. The MS Mount Washington tour boat makes it's winter home in Center Harbor before returning to service in the spring.

Moving north on the lake you come to the town of Moultonborough, which has the most shorefront of any town on Lake Winnipesaukee. The Olde Country Store is a step back in town to when general stores were the only place to shop. Buying penny candy by the bag is fun for anyone young or old. Red Hill makes for a quick hike with a great payoff of long views of the Lakes Region and the Ossipee Mountains. Moultonborough has always been very inviting to waterfront real estate buyers because of their region low property taxes.

Tuftonboro is located on the north side of Lake Winnipesaukee and includes Melvin Village. Some of the most sought after waterfront can be found here. For those who are looking for quiet serenity and a peaceful region of Lake Winnipesaukee this could be the area for you. Center Tuftonboro has great antiques shops including Dow's, which is known throughout the northeast.

Moving east around the lake you come to the "oldest summer resort town" in the country, Wolfeboro. Wolfeboro is one of the most picturesque towns you will find. Main street runs parallel to the water and many of the quaint stores face on to Lake Winnipesaukee. Dinner at Garwoods dockside patio at sunset with drink in hand can't be beat. The Wolfeboro Inn is a lovely place to stay and a favorite spot for weddings. Standing over the bridge to the back bay is a good spot to see some of the wood boats of lake days gone by pass under.

Alton lies in the southeast corner of the lake and is a great place to visit by boat or car. Although the waterfront doesn't have as many restaurants as other lakeside towns the Sandy Point is well worth a try. The fried clam plate is a must here. Those who are looking for great views should take a hike up Mt. Major. Some of the best views of Lake Winnipesaukee can be found here. From a travelling stand point, Alton is a short drive to the New Hampshire seacoast, which has always one of it's strongest selling points.

Gilford on the southside of lake is home to the largest local airport (Laconia Airport) and yacht club (Mountain View Yacht Club). Some of the most exclusive properties can be found here including homes on Governors Island. This is one of only a handful of islands that have bridge access. Gunstock ski area is the largest ski mountain in the lakes region and is located in Gilford as well.

The last town bordering Lake Winnipesaukee is Laconia. It is the largest town in terms of population. The famous Weirs Beach is located here and is the center of the motorcycle world every June during bike week. Weirs Beach is the main port for the Mount Washington tour boat and the Winnipesaukee train. The Naswa beach bar on the Weirs channel is probably the most famous boat in bars on the lake. Bands on the beach on Sundays is always a great time (weather permitting).
